What to wear on the day?

So, you’ve finalised your booking, and its not too far away from the date of your session, and you’re wondering what you and the family should wear on the day.

This is very subjective, and it is my belief that it’s possible to get nice photos of you and your family whatever you’re wearing. It’s not unheard of in family photography sessions for one parent who isn’t wild about getting their photos taken, to wear something that doesn’t match the theme that the other parent wanted.

Some clients feel more comfortable in shorts and thongs, and that’s okay. It won’t ruin your session if you wear these things. There is an argument to made for wearing casual outfits as it can reflect what your normal day to day is. To any persons feeling stressed or overwhelmed that their partner may be resistant to wearing ‘nice clothes’ for their session, I would recommend that you simply wear what you would like to wear and let your partner wear what they would like to. It can be annoying, but it’s not the end of the world and we’ll still get some lovely photos.

As a general rule, my suggestion on attire for sessions is ‘smart casual’. Ironed, clean shirts/ dresses, and neutral earth-y tones where possible. No chipped nail polish, either clean shaven or rocking the beard (stubble doesn’t look great for photos sadly). In short, I like to joke that anything that would be worthy of a brunch with your in-laws.

However, a few tips I have are:
DO
Wear shoes you can run or walk in. Heels look gorgeous, but save those for another day. It’s not unusual for us to have to walk around during our photo session, or for me to ask someone to do a short run.

Bring a bottle of water! You may not need it, but it never hurts to have one sitting in your car.

Bring a Jacket - again, you might not need it (in fact, in Brisbane it’s quite unlikely you will!) but it won’t hurt you to have one nearby if needed.

At the end of the day, it’s your photo session and you can wear whatever you like. Dressing up for your photos is a great idea and really helps make your photos have that little bit of extra polish, but at the end of the day we’re here to capture your smiles and love, not your clothes. ( Unless you rock up in morph suits, which is completely fine and I hope someone does this).

I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with for your session, and if you’re ever concerned you’re more than welcome to contact me.
